GM maize in feed for dairy farmers in Halland

For the first time, high levels of GMO were found in imported maize. At a clean routine check last week, 3.9 percent of GMO were found in a batch of imported GMO-free maize that was cultivated in Poland.

Lantmännen bought the batch from a Dutch trading company. It was bought as a GMO-free European product from a supplier that we never had problems with before, said Kjell Larsson, responsible for feed safety at Lantmännen. Both the Dutch trading company and Lantmännen, which supplied products to farmers without correct labelling, according to Kjell Larsson, have acted in good faith. Approximately 100 tonnes of the lot for a total of 1200 tonnes has been delivered to farmers, most dairy farmers in Halland (Southern Sweden). Should have been labelled The remarkable thing is that whoever put this lot in the market has not noticed that it was GMO contaminated. And if the trading company who sold it to us knew about it then we had never received the goods because we have a contract for purchasing GMO-free, said Kjell Larsson. It was last Tuesday, Lantmännen found the GMO contamination. Then it took a few days before it had verified that the same variety was in the plant. Once it was clear, Lantmännen stopped the further sales. Then tested also stocked feed in another plant, and it was GMO-free. What happens to the contaminated feed maize that have already been provided to farmers? We have talked to the dairies, and they see it as an accident at work. Some requirements for withdrawals from the farms has not been presented, said Kjell Larsson. Record Normally, it is imported soya that is the problem, with maize, there had never before seen that the contamination levels over the limit. For a product to be considered as GMO-free, contamination should not be over 0.9 percent. The batch, which came in via Falkenberg, Lantmännen found 3.9 percent high GMO contamination, a record high level. It was MON 810, a variety that is approved and authorized for cultivation in the EU. This just shows that Europe is full of GMOs, although we do not want to see it, says Kjell Larsson.
